On the Rocks

Have you ever wet a rock? If you have, you know how dramatically its color and character
transform when touched by water. The rocks along the McKenzie River have always
mesmerized me, with their endless variations of color, texture, shape, and light creating a
landscape within the landscape.

One day, while floating the river, I saw perched on a rock along the bank of Beaver Cove, a
small trio of cone-shaped forms, almost invisible among the infinite array of colors, shapes, and shadows surrounding them. A breath of wind might have scattered them. Yet there they sat, quietly holding their own small glory. Seeing them reminded me to look - to slow down and truly look. On the Rocks honors the fleeting, easily overlooked beauties that exist within a much larger landscape, inviting us to notice the small wonders that might otherwise pass unseen.
