When I first came upon this rusty pile of heavy chain, oddly heaped in the mud along the
riverbank, I wondered where it had come from and how it had ended up there rather than at the bottom of the river. Yet whatever its history, nature was already reclaiming it.
Slowly, relentlessly, the chain was being transformed by rust, water, weather, and time.
Emancipation explores the quiet inevitability of erosion and reclamation, the gradual return of what we make to the natural world.
Given enough time, even the strongest structures we create will weather, break down, and become part of the landscape once again. Nature does not hurry. It simply reclaims what was always, in some sense, hers.
