Born in Russia and deported by the Tsarist regime in 1913, Raphael Soyer, his two brothers and parents, settled in New York's Lower East Side where the experience of immigrant life in the United States would provide him with a rich source of imagery for his art. Following study at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design, Soyer's success at his first exhibition in 1929 secured his position as a professional artist. Entering the Studio, a portrait of his wife, belongs to a series of works devoted to intimate scenes of his own family's life produced in the mid-1930s. Like the work of his contemporary Ben Shahn, Soyer's paintings often dealt with the concerns of the poor and everyday life, portraying their subjects and settings with strong, flat colors which evoked a sense of isolation
