Dirceu Carvalho (1942), "Tucans in Sunflower"
Dirceu Carvalho(1942), "Tucans in Sunflower" 2001 20x30 cm Original acrylic on canvas Sao Paulo,Brazil
Dirceu Carvalho was born on 10 September 1942 in the city of "Dois Corregos", in the interior of State of São Paulo, Brazil. As a boy, he began drawing in school, never imagining he would become a plastic artist later on in life. He had already reached adulthood when he was encouraged by his friend and colleague, Edgar Calhado, to create primitive art, confined to folklore, and was guided by the artist Cassio M'Boy, the pioneer of primitive, painting in Brazil. His first paintings sold as if he were an accomplished artist, which is a very rare fact in the world of art.
"...My near-obsession for painting trains is due to my childhood, when my father, who was a train conductor, allowed me to take clandestine rides on the trains, during which I used to hang on the whistle cord so that the shrillness of the sound was as acute as possible..."
"...Brides also appear frequently in my paintings, mostly pregnant. This is because rural weddings usually only take place after harvest. This way, the newly-weds can spend their honeymoon with the money earned from the crop. By the time harvest is finalized, the bride already appears pregnant. After harvest, the farm owner usually finances the party, because most probably, there are other brides in the same condition, and so several weddings take place during one party..."

Curtis Verdun (1962) USA, "The King's Descent"
Curtis Verdun (1962) USA, The King's Descent. Dimensions:, 20" x 16", Medium:, Oil on Canvas, 1-1/2" Deep, Gallery-Wrapped Canvas, 2003, Signed by the artist, Curtis Verdun.
Curtis Verdun is a Native American Indian of the Biloxi-Chitimachas. He feels that his heritage has had a strong influence on his work and his outlook on life. The South Louisiana area where he lives has such wonderfully diverse people, a rich culture and breathtaking landscapes - all very influential to his work as a Louisiana artist. Of the fondest memories during the artist's early life, Verdun recalls Christmas of '74. He was 12 years old then and one of the gifts his parents had given him was a Grumbacher oil painting set. Up to that point he had always been drawing and painting with whatever materials were available. This gift strengthened his desire to paint and he soon developed the uncanny ability to paint likenesses of people and at 13 he completed his first oil portrait commission. Oil portraits became his mainstay for many years. Commission clients since then have included universities, churches and other businesses as well as individual collectors of fine art. Curtis Verdun is a self-taught artist, except for a one-week portrait workshop with Daniel Green in 1987. He feels that throughout his career he has learned much from reading about the great masters, both in technique and aesthetics. (Some of his favorite painters are the Abstract Expressionists.) To accelerate his learning, he has also copied their works, experimented with their various painting techniques and methods and prepared painting mediums by their recipes. He now even grinds much of his oil paints himself and also builds and prepares many of his own canvases art. When asked about where he learned to paint, he responds, "My subjects teach me."

Robyn Henzel USA, “Mother & Daughter”, Oil on Canvas, Dimensions: 11" x 14", 2003
She was born in New York City and grew up in Rockaway Beach, New York. She paints in New York City and in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Robyn has been creating since childhood. She started drawing her "ladies" in the margins of her notebooks at school, sometimes not even hearing what the teacher was saying. She began approaching larger scale works by drawing on the back of brown paper bags from the supermarket and one of the drawings done in High School ended up at a show at Lever House Gallery in New York City and took an award. The artist received a Bachelor of Arts from Baruch College, City University of New York, where she was awarded the Wollman Medal for Political Science and received her Juris Doctorate from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York. Returning to New York City after extensive international traveling, the artist went on to study and receive Certification in Software Development and Design at Columbia University's Computer Technology and Applications Program. Today, Ms. Henzel remains fascinated by the intersection of technology and art, human and machine, primitive and tribal as these qualities intersect with impersonal and sterile modern life. Robyn studied painting at the Art Student's League of New York, where she is currently a Member. The artist studied predominantly with Andrew Lukach and William Scharf and has recently begun studying with renowned classical painter Richard Pionk. All of these great American painters have strongly influenced the artist's work and inspired her to follow her own path to innovative artistic expression.

"Apparently that is me in the upper-left corner of the piece. I think anyone that encounters great anxiety before/during social engagements can easily relate to this piece. Part of my Pertroglyph series. The background for this piece is nicely textured and takes on a 'stone' quality."
